At one point, it all became a bit too much. After one particular visit to a yoghurt café (with flavours such as ‘birthday cake’ and ‘salted caramel pretzel’) I slumped onto the grass in a parking bay and threw up a flavour of yoghurt that will never appear on the café’s menu. This moment of poise and class was compounded when I looked up and saw a very respectable family of four watching me through the window of the café. I had a quick nap on the grass, pulled myself together, stomached some more sugar and hit the highway.

Through my sugar and jetlag haze, the countryside was even more spectacular and surreal than usual. An incredibly coloured ‘Fanta’ sunset poured out before me as I pulled into the small town of Barbourville, Kentucky, not far from the Appalachian Mountains.
